First Black American Senator Elected in South US

In another historical landmark, A first black senator was elected in America deep South for the first time since 200 years. Tim Scott, 49, is the first black person to serve since 1865 for a southern state and the fifth African-American to ever serve in the Senate. He is a Republican and from South Carolina


He succeeds Jim DeMint, who resigned in 2012, and will finish the final two years of his predecessor's six-year term while the House of Representatives. This is a bad news for Obama, after the Republicans took hold of 52 seats in total, leaving the Democrats with 43.

It might interest you to know that Tim Scott grandfather was employed as a young cotton-picker in the US.
